100% Design: Crinson's Countdown

Hello from Puff&Flock! We'll be covering the London Design Festival this year for mydeco.com, giving you an insider's perspective of one of the world's biggest creative events. As exhibitors, we see all sides of the LDF - the planning that starts in March, the brainstorming that starts in April, the sketching that starts in May, the call for help that starts in June, the panic that starts in July, the hard work that starts in August, and finally the action that starts in September. With less than a week to go before opening, it's time to finish it all up! As the preparation gives way to presentation, we'll write about what goes on behind the scenes.

To start it off, we present the working profile of a designer who is showing at 100% Design and whose digitally printed tiles and wallpaper are an inspiration to us textile designers: Dominic Crinson. What is he up to in the final few days before 100% Design opens?

He is, in short, extremely busy. This is the first time in five years that Dominic has exhibited during London Design Festival. After six consecutive exhibitions at 100% Design from 1999 - 2005, he decided to take a hiatus from what felt like a repetitive venture. A lot has changed in the meantime, out in the design world as well as in his studio, and he will be presenting a fresh collection of surface designs this year.

The stock is so new, in fact, that it's still in transit! After telling me this, Dominic makes a mental note to call the delivery service.

Dominic is based in the same studio unit that we use in East London. Last week, we saw him standing outside on a piece of cardboard during lunchtime. He disappeared back in the studio and returned soon after with a stack of tiles, then started laying them out on the cardboard. What was he up to? As usual, these days, when we see a designer performing an inexplicably random activity, there is only one explanation - LDF.

He was getting ready for Earls Court, which apparently has an uneven concrete floor. He'll be laying some of his brand new tiles on the floor of his stand, and was testing different ways to create an even base to lay them on.

Delayed shipments and impossible installation spaces - these are the things that occupy our days in the countdown to London Design Festival. But from September 23rd to September 26th 2010, it will all be a distant memory for Dominic, as he debuts a delicious range of digitally printed surfaces. Visit him to see the result of all his hard work:

Four wallpapers in one

This wallpaper by Carnovsky (a Milan based collective) shows layers of patterns in different colours (green, red, yellow and blue). With normal light, all the layers appear at the same time. The magic happens when they are exposed to a colored light (green, red or blue). Suddenly some of the patterns are revealed while the others become invisible! The potential of the idea is infinite, so much to play around with!

So inspiring and brilliant, isn't it? (Or should I say bright?)

Puff and Flock mid Summer crit

Because we try to be serious and because we often get stuck on our own stuff, there is nothing like meeting and use fresh eyes. Man, we really needed that one !
Thank you Kathy for hosting (and feeding, or that wouldn't be a proper Puff & Flock meeting)

Surface Design Association conference

Kathyann White taught her innovative digital printing method at the conference’s workshop series.

The Surface Design Association is a network of textile artists and designers based in America. Their annual conference just took place two weeks ago, and was full of talks and competitions. The competition judges included Jessica Hemmings, who was our thesis advisor, and Jennifer Angus, who I volunteered for once in San Francisco.

While in New York, we met a woman who was very excited about new textiles and was preparing to go to the SDA show in Kansas. It would be a pleasure to attend it in the future, since it seems like a place to find support and new ideas. This year’s title was “Off the Grid”, reflecting the theme of unexpected change that is so currently relevant.

“Patterns in our life and in our work often develop and repeat in a regular manner, and then something unexpected happens. Something shifts slightly and the pattern and rhythm become radically new. It is in those moments of unexpected change that great possibility exists. We shift. We transform. We go off the grid aesthetically, conceptually, or environmentally. In this conference we will concentrate on how we can seek those points of departure and together, go off the grid.”
