Suzanne Lee - "What would you choose to grow in the future?"

Suzanne Lee, researcher and associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College in MA Textile Future, talks about her research on growing materials with green tea, sugar, living bacteria, yeast and micro organisms. We have followed the evolution of her experiments since we were first introduced to her work in 2007 in college, and it is nice to see how colour and pattern were inserted in her work. Milan Design for Textile Futures invasion :)

We could just about escape from our stand in Ventura Lambrate but we didn't want to miss the stunning work selection the students from MA textile Futures (Central Saint Martins College London) showcased this week in the Lambrate area.


The course (we ourselves graduated from in 2008) is celebrating this year its 10 years.
10 years of challenging perception of textiles and surfaces we live with in our material world.

Reef exhibited at 1:1 research by design

Reef is the design of a self-actuated ceiling questioning how adaptive minimum energy structures can contribute re-establishing home in a synergic relationship with nature. Composed by an archipelago of electro-active modules, Reef constantly re-designs its own landscape as its modules change shape according to the exterior. Like a sail, they open and close gradually following the pulse of the wind, materializing the invisible flow of energy that connects the inside with the outside. Like corals, Reef is calcifying over time as the supporting technology is becoming obsolete, transferring its actuation back to the inhabitant as natural airflow is invited to come in.

Reef is currently displayed as a part of the 1:1 research by design, an exhibition by Institute 4 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen until the 10th of April 2011. All the details about the exhibition here.

MA Textile Futures

The MA in Design in for Textiles Futures at Central St Martins opens its doors on the evening of Tuesday 11th Jan to a new world of experiences in Textiles. The current second year students will be showcasing their MA projects at the 'Work In Progress' show in their 10th Floor Studio.
As ever the topics researched are cutting edge, exploring current issues and setting trends from Nano and Biotechnology to new craft techniques and sustainability.

As graduates of the MA, Puff & Flock know only to well the importance of this show as a test bed for discussing ideas generating new avenues to explore. We are looking forward to seeing the work and we will be reporting the show from the three different perspectives of Amelie, Elisabeth and Melissa.
