Reef exhibited at 1:1 research by design

Reef is the design of a self-actuated ceiling questioning how adaptive minimum energy structures can contribute re-establishing home in a synergic relationship with nature. Composed by an archipelago of electro-active modules, Reef constantly re-designs its own landscape as its modules change shape according to the exterior. Like a sail, they open and close gradually following the pulse of the wind, materializing the invisible flow of energy that connects the inside with the outside. Like corals, Reef is calcifying over time as the supporting technology is becoming obsolete, transferring its actuation back to the inhabitant as natural airflow is invited to come in.

Reef is currently displayed as a part of the 1:1 research by design, an exhibition by Institute 4 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen until the 10th of April 2011. All the details about the exhibition here.

Live from the Digital Hub at the V&A, Puff & Flock take on a sewing workshop.

While at the V&A, checking out the Digital Hub, Framed by Stuart Haygarth and Max Lamb's piece in the Cast Courts, I decided to test my sewing skills by taking part in 'Trafalgar in Flight' sewing workshop.

The idea is to reinstate banned pigeons to Trafalgar Square by making a whole new flock. Ok they are stuffed and can't fly unless thrown but they are still pigeons!


Once all the pigeons are sewn they will be taken to Trafalgar Square, photographed and set free to make their way back to their makers, as long as you gave them your address that is.


Put together by Selvedge magazine and designed by printers Thornback & Peel, the workshop took place over the first two days of the London Design Festival and is the start to a week long program at the V&A. Free and drop in, there are workshops in stitching, fabric making and metal work everyday until Friday 24th. Be sure to stop by.

Invasion of Trafalgar Square by German Robots

The Outrace installation in Trafalgar Square is very clever. It has to be! A collaboration between Audi with their 'Vorsprung durch Technik' mantra and two very serious and clever looking designers, Clemens Weisshaar and Redd Karm, Outrace could be nothing but. So what is it?


In its basic form Outrace is a circle of eight car making robots borrowed from Audi and each fitted with a powerful LED light at its head.

Commissioned by the London Design Festival, it's purpose is to enable the general public to write large scale messages which are then 'drawn' in light by the robots. A message is processed every sixty seconds and the technology used allows the handling of 10,000 messages per week.


The sight is magical. The 'arms' move with such smoothness and grace that it is hard to perceive they are industrial machines normally programmed to make industrial product. Taken from their home and placed in such an alien environment, I imagine if they had emotions the robots would feel a little out of place and uncomfortable with all the attention. But they don't look or seem out of place. In a historic open space in the centre of a bustling metropolis with invisible technology surrounding us, they are a reminder of the industrial, technological and design processes that allow us to live our daily lives.


The arms move too slowly to see the letters with the naked eye, but they can be picked up by slow motion cameras. To get your message written and lots more information go to www.outrace.org. Then type in your message and wait to see if the robots will write it for you. If they do the drawing will be filmed and an e-mail sent to you so you can show friends.

I have done it, so let us hope it pasts the test. Watch this space!

Ayda Anlagan is a London based industrial designer who enjoys incorporating humour in her products. After graduating from Middle East Technical University in Turkey she moved to London and completed her MA in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She came up with the concept for Monstify while indulging in her hobby of making monster finger puppets for her friends and their children as gifts.

After successfully exhibiting at Milan she decided to turn it into a business and is currently working towards using Monstify as a means to establishing a fair trade product range that will be manufactured by Indian women in the crafts. Since her graduation Ayda has won a Royal Society of the Arts Award, started up a small business and has been working on socially responsive projects with organizations such as Age Concern, Hackney and The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Carbon Copy

Soon to be exhibited at Interiors Birmingham (24th-27th January) Jan Hendzel of Hendzel and Hunt demonstrates the lightweight nature of the Carbon Copy chair. Carbon Copy is a collaboration between Puff & Flock and Hendzel and Hunt in association with Ercol.

Silvergate bench by Jenny Leary

Jenny Leary (Puff & Flock) reshapes steel offcuts from the PoCheung Steel factory in Hong Kong. They become decorative panels in the Ercol chair backrest, taking design inspiration from wrought iron garden gates. The addition of magnetic strips to the chair allow these steel panels to be removable.

Magical glow textiles by Kathy Schicker

Creating a magical dark space in collaboration with Ercol and sponsored by ‘Toray’ Europe limited, Kathy Schicker (Puff & Flock) has crafted a number of beautiful unique handmade glow in the dark birds. These are hidden in a magical landscape printed on to high tech fabric and interwoven with Ercol furniture.


Carbon Copy by Jan Hendzel and Oscar Hunt of Hendzel and Hunt and Jenny Leary and Melissa French.

Makers and designers Jan Hendzel and Oscar Hunt (Hendzel and Hunt) test their technical might in partnership with Jenny Leary and Melissa French (Puff & Flock) to produce a textile copy of the iconic Ercol Butterfly chair. Combining carbon fibre and one of Ercol’s bestselling fabrics, this chair is lightweight yet rigid creating an intriguing curiosity.
